U4GM POE2 Where Patch 0.5 Builds Win and Lose

Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 reshapes builds, Atlas progression, crafting, and class balance, with Martial Artist and Spirit Walker rising while Bloodmage and some melee setups fall.

Patch 0.5, "Return of the Ancients," lands like a proper shake-up rather than a neat little balance pass. You'll feel it as soon as builds start leaning on new defensive rules, fresh Atlas goals, and a market where PoE2 Currency matters even more for early gearing choices. Old comfort picks aren't gone, but plenty of them now need more thought. The patch rewards players who can move, recover, and layer defences instead of just stacking one broken interaction and calling it a day.

New ascendancies are getting the loudest buzz

Martial Artist looks like the flashy winner right out of the gate. Monk players finally get something that feels sharp, quick, and a bit dangerous in the best way. Hollow Form clones, bell detonations, and Power Charge scaling give it clear routes for both clearing and bossing. It's not just "hit faster" design either. There's timing involved, and that'll appeal to players who like their melee builds to feel active. Spirit Walker is also in a strong spot. Huntress builds using companions, mobility, and Runic Ward tools should have a smoother time surviving messy fights without giving up too much pressure.

Casters didn't escape untouched, but they look comfortable

Chronomancer may be the surprise pick for players thinking beyond day one. It used to feel a bit too clever for its own good, while simpler damage ascendancies got the job done faster. Now its delayed-damage tricks and Energy Shield recovery tools make more sense. When incoming hits are harder to ignore, being able to control recovery windows is a real advantage. Stormweaver also remains popular, especially with Spark, Orb of Storms, and freeze setups. Those builds still level well, clear safely, and don't need perfect gear to feel decent in early maps.

The Atlas changes might matter more than class balance

The endgame redesign is probably the healthiest part of the patch. Before this, a lot of players hit maps and just drifted. Run a map, grab loot, repeat, hope something interesting happens. Now the Atlas has clearer regions, fortress goals, story threads, and boss targets that give each session a better sense of direction. Delirium, Ritual, and Breach also seem less chaotic than before. They're still dangerous, sure, but the pacing and readability look cleaner. That helps more than people think, because clunky builds can survive when the screen isn't constantly screaming at them.

Old power loops take the biggest hit

Bloodmage players have the most reason to grumble. Leech changes, Covenant adjustments, and Atziri's Acuity reworks all chip away at the sustain loops that made expensive trigger setups feel so safe. The ascendancy isn't dead, but it won't carry sloppy gearing like it used to. Some melee builds are also worse off, especially ones built around splash abuse, Rolling Slam patterns, Whirling Assault tricks, or Boneshatter-style scaling. Recombinator changes sting too. Players who loved controlled crafting lose a major tool, while others are glad the economy gets room to breathe, even if buying PoE2 Currency for sale will still be part of how many players speed up early upgrades and testing.
