U4GM Diablo 4 Why Artificer Tiers Matter

Find out how Artificer Tiers work in Diablo 4, where to enter the Pit, how tiers unlock Torment levels, and what to check when progression feels stuck.

Artificer Tiers in Diablo 4 aren't a separate dungeon you've somehow missed. They're the tier levels inside the Pit of the Artificer, and they matter because they gate harder Pit runs, Torment progress, and Paragon Glyph upgrades. If you're already farming gear, sorting aspects, or checking diablo 4 items for build ideas, you'll still need to push the Pit itself. Character level alone won't do the job. The game expects you to clear the highest Artificer Tier you can currently select, then it opens more tiers from there.

Where the Pit actually starts

The safest place to look is Cerrigar. Players point to the Artificer's Obelisk there, and guide coverage also names Cerrigar as the main access point. You interact with the Obelisk, choose the Artificer's Pit option, and then pick a tier from the list or drop-down. Some guide material also mentions Temis as another Obelisk location, but that's less firmly backed up. So if you're wandering around Temis and getting annoyed, don't overthink it. Go to Cerrigar first. The important part is the menu after the Obelisk, not a cave door in the open world.

How Artificer Tiers unlock

The basic loop is simple, though the interface can make it feel less clear than it should. Clear the highest Artificer Tier available to you. Once you do that, the next five tiers should become selectable. Then you pick the new highest tier and repeat. Clearing comfortable lower tiers can still help with practice or Glyph upgrades, but it won't push your unlock track forward if the game is waiting for your top available tier. One guide also says these unlocked tiers apply account-wide, which would explain why alts may see progress already opened, though that detail isn't confirmed by many sources.

Torment unlocks are the messy bit

This is where players get stuck, especially around Torment 1 into Torment 2. One recent guide says Torment 1 starts around Artificer Tier 10 and suggests later Torments unlock every five Artificer Tiers after that. Forum advice gives different numbers: Tier 25 for Torment 2, Tier 40 for Torment 3, and Tier 55 for Torment 4. Those claims don't line up cleanly. In practice, don't treat the difficulty statue as the main problem. Keep pushing the highest Pit tier the menu gives you. If the next Torment still won't open after the required clear, check Seasonal Journey progress, then consider that you may be hitting a bug or a season-specific rule.

Why Glyphs matter while you push

The Pit isn't only a lockpick for Torment. It's also where your Paragon Glyphs grow, and that matters a lot once monster health starts climbing. Higher Artificer Tiers give better chances to upgrade Glyphs, while high-level Glyphs become harder to improve. If you run a much higher Pit than a low Glyph's level, the upgrade can feel close to guaranteed, and some coverage says bonus ranks may kick in for catch-up. The exact formula isn't clear, so don't build a plan around perfect numbers. Just use each successful run to raise the Glyphs your build actually uses.

What to do if you're still blocked

If you can't unlock the next step, check the simple stuff first. Did you clear the highest tier, or just a lower one? Did you scroll the tier list? Are you trying to unlock Torment from the world difficulty menu before doing the Pit work? Seasonal characters should also glance at the early Journey pages, since there may be a seasonal gate in some cases. Once your build starts hitting a wall, improve damage, defence, and Glyph levels before pushing again; even players looking at buy Diablo 4 Items options still have to beat the tier timer and boss cleanly for the unlock to count.
